Modular Smartphones

Project Ara, a modular smartphone initiative by Google, aimed to create customizable devices with interchangeable hardware modules. Epitomical, chosen as one of two suppliers for Radio and Core processor modules, contributed expertise based on experience from its Spur brand of consumer devices. Originally designed for a broad user base, the project sought to extend device lifecycles and reduce electronic waste. Despite initial plans, Project Ara was eventually shelved in 2016, impacting the vision of a fully modular and upgradable smartphone.

The project aims to transform Highways England's (HE) earthworks monitoring through satellite data. Project M3 involved the redesign and enhancement of the multimedia cased products for Antenna International. The goal is to utilise off-the-shelf smartphones, specifically including the Obi 4 developed by Epitomical's brand, Spur, as the device for AI multimedia guides. The existing install base of 28,000 products, nearing the end of its life, prompted the need for an upgrade.

Maratus, led by Epitomical, aimed to enhance connected devices by fostering a modular ecosystem. Users could customise their devices, choosing hardware, operating systems (OS), and applications that suit their preferences. Maratus focused on OS modularity, offering choices like Android, Firefox OS, Ubuntu, and more. The initiative aim to address the rapid growth of connected devices, mainstream brands' limitations, and the lack of official support for many devices. The collective effort involves independent communities, contributors, and companies, with a seed product planned for complete lifecycle demonstration.

Hackathon

Epitomical was invited to participate as an Advisor by the King Abul Aziz University for the Oxagon Hackathon. The Hackathon was conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia, inviting inventive teams to address significant challenges in technology, water innovation, green hydrogen, and e-fuels. The hackathon focuses on areas like advanced sensing, robotics, big data analytics, and material science. The top three winning teams gain entry to the Oxagon Accelerator program, while all participants receive exposure and networking opportunities.

Project Tokyo

Automated Driving

Epitomical is selected as the only foreign SME to participate with SIP-adus, in its second phase, focuses on advancing automated driving through collaborative efforts in Tokyo, Japan. The project conducts Field Operational Tests (FOTs) to address common issues, emphasising industry-academia-government collaboration. The aim is to deploy automated driving solutions that contribute to societal challenges, such as reducing accidents, easing congestion, providing mobility for vulnerable road users, and addressing driver shortages and logistics costs. By creating a safer and more comfortable driving environment, FOTs play a crucial role in accelerating technology implementation, addressing system challenges, and gaining social acceptance. For this phase, the following implementation were considered - Waterfront City area, Haneda Airport area, Metropolitan Expressway routes connecting Haneda Airport and the Waterfront City area (including ordinary roads).

5G Connected Vehicles

Project Stag builds on the capabilities of the Innovate UK-funded Project Alloyed, proposing two demonstrations. The first involves network-agnostic Vehicle to Cloud Communication over 5G, with an On-Board Unit (OBU) capturing vehicle diagnostics data and connecting to the 5G Testbed, facilitating remote monitoring and live data access. The second demonstration showcases network-agnostic Vehicle to Infrastructure Communication, featuring an OBU in the vehicle and a Road-side Unit (RSU) on road-side infrastructure, supporting a Co-Operative Intelligent Transport System over 5G. These initiatives contribute to advancing connected vehicle technologies in the 5G context.

The AI system classifies data, reducing false positives and enhancing security responses. Similarly, in counter-intrusion applications for critical infrastructure, autonomous assets maintain constant awareness, creating a resilient security network. Epitomical served as an advisor to the VEICOLNET team participating in the Innovation to Commercialisation of University Research (ICURe) program. The team focused on leveraging hidden vehicle data to enable fewer breakdowns, reduce downtime, and lower maintenance costs, especially for heavy-duty vehicles. The technology provides access to OBD vehicle data, targeting various vehicle types like passenger, heavy-duty, fire & rescue, and buses. The global revenue pool from car data monetisation is projected to reach $450 billion to $750 billion by 2030. VEICOLNET addresses the pain points of breakdown-related costs through predictive maintenance, utilising machine learning and AI for data analysis.
